The Shuiyuan Ancestral Residence was built in the early 20th century by the Ye family. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, it served as a transit stop, providing rest and supplies for Chinese guerrillas and patriots.
In December 1941, following the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong, more than 800 patriotic intellectuals found themselves stranded in the city. The Guangdong People’s Guerrilla Force Against Japanese Aggression led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) escorted these people back to the mainland, with the Shuiyuan Ancestral Residence serving as a temporary shelter.
After renovations in 2021, the residence has been transformed into a memorial hall that showcases the history of the Dongjiang Column of Guangdong People’s Guerrilla Force Against Japanese Aggression. It also functions as a base for studying the CPC history and includes a book room.
